Scared of What You'll Find in the Silence

True trust is developed not in grand moments, but in the daily practice of recognizing God's provision and choosing stillness over distraction.

Inspired by a conversation between Christian Williams and John Moore on The Holy Rebellion.

In a world obsessed with instant gratification, there's something profound about waiting for daily bread. I've been thinking about the Israelites lately – how they wandered through the desert, waking up each morning to gather manna. They couldn't store it. They couldn't control it. They just had to trust it would be there again tomorrow.

We don't live in a desert, but we're wandering through something equally challenging: a landscape of endless notifications, constant connectivity, and the persistent illusion that we can control everything if we just stay plugged in enough. Our modern manna often comes in the form of likes, shares, and digital validation.

But here's what I've learned: God's provision rarely looks like what we expect.

Sometimes it shows up as an unexpected check when the bank account is empty. Sometimes it's the strength to face another day when you thought you couldn't. And sometimes – perhaps most importantly – it appears as the courage to turn off your phone and sit in the quiet long enough to hear that still, small voice.

We've become masters at avoiding silence. We fill every moment with noise, every second with scrolling, every quiet space with distraction. But what if our greatest act of rebellion isn't fighting against the system, but simply choosing to be still?

The irony doesn't escape me that while we're more connected than ever, we're struggling more than ever to connect with what matters most. We check our phones hundreds of times a day but struggle to check in with our souls. We scroll through countless stories but miss the greatest story being written in our own lives.

Here's the truth that's changed my life: God is still in the business of daily provision, but sometimes we're too distracted to notice it. We're looking for grand gestures while He's sending daily manna. We're waiting for our ship to come in while He's teaching us to trust in the small miracles of each day.

The journey to our promised land rarely looks like a straight line. It's filled with detours, waiting periods, and moments where we cry out, "God, where are you?" But these are precisely the moments where trust is refined and faith is strengthened.

In my own life, I've learned that frustration with God isn't the opposite of faith – it's often part of the journey toward deeper trust. Every time I've reached the end of my resources, every time I've faced an impossible situation, He's shown up. Not always in the way I expected, but always in the way I needed.

So here's my challenge to you: What if, instead of filling every quiet moment with noise, we learned to embrace the silence? What if, instead of constantly seeking more, we learned to recognize the daily manna that's already falling around us?

In a world that's constantly pushing us to hustle harder, achieve more, and never stop moving, maybe the most revolutionary act is simply learning to trust – daily, consistently, even when we can't see the whole path ahead.

Because here's what I know for sure: The same God who provided manna in the desert is still providing today. Sometimes we just need to put down our phones long enough to notice it.

Your promised land might not look like what you expected. But the daily journey of trust? That's where the real miracle happens.
