Remembering Christ: The Spiritual Significance of Sacred Garments
In a world obsessed with outward appearance, make the choice to remember what lies beneath.
I was recently reflecting on a question that many of us have pondered at some point in our spiritual journey: "Why do we wear garments at all?" It's a question worth exploring, not just for those who already wear them, but for anyone seeking to understand the deeper symbolism in our faith.
A Symbol of Remembrance
At its core, the garment was given as a way to remember. Much like the story of Adam and Eve, who were clothed by God after the Fall, our garments serve as a daily reminder of our covenants and our complete reliance on Jesus Christ.
Think about it – remembering Jesus Christ is the basis of the gospel. Everything we do, from taking the sacrament to serving others, is meant to turn our hearts and minds to Him. The garment is simply another way—a personal, intimate way—to remember Him throughout each day.
The garment is a symbol of His atonement. It covers us just as His sacrifice covers our sins and imperfections. When we put it on each morning, we're wrapping ourselves in a tangible reminder that we are reliant on Him for everything in our lives.
Personal Revelation and Sacred Clothing
One thing I've learned on this journey is that personal revelation is essential in understanding how to wear garments. While there are guidelines provided by church leaders, the Spirit guides each of us individually in how to honor our covenants.
A friend once shared with me that "the Spirit will not inspire you to do less." This profound insight has stuck with me. When we sincerely seek guidance about wearing the garment, the Spirit will lead us toward greater faithfulness, not less.
In moments of uncertainty or questioning, it's important to remember why we made these covenants in the first place. We don't wear the garment because someone told us to—we wear it because we've made sacred promises with God, and we desire to keep those promises.
Protection and Strength in Daily Life
Many have shared personal experiences of how the garment has provided protection and strength in their lives. This protection isn't always physical—though some have remarkable stories of that nature—but it's often spiritual and emotional.
When faced with temptation, the garment serves as a physical reminder of our commitments. When struggling with difficult decisions, it reminds us to seek divine guidance. When feeling alone or discouraged, it reminds us that we are covered by Christ's infinite love.
We need greater access to the Savior's mercy in our daily lives. The garment can be that access point—a constant connection to Him as we navigate the challenges of mortality.
The Journey to Sacred Spaces
I'll never forget a powerful experience shared by a friend about his journey to the temple. He described waking up one morning with an unmistakable prompting: "You are going to go to the temple today." Although he had been preparing, he hadn't planned to go that particular day.
As he reflected on the events leading up to that moment, he realized that God had orchestrated everything in his path. Every conversation, every challenge, every blessing had prepared him for this sacred experience.
Standing at the threshold of the temple, he felt unworthy. But then came another gentle prompting: "You don't have to be perfect to be here." What a beautiful reminder that none of us needs to wait until we're flawless to enter sacred spaces. We come as we are, with a willingness to become better.
The confirmation came as he moved forward: "You're ready, you're ready." Sometimes we need that divine reassurance that we're on the right path, even when we doubt ourselves.
Sacred Covenants in Marriage
One of the most challenging aspects of honoring covenants can be navigating them within marriage. When it comes to garments specifically, open communication is essential.
Have the conversation early and often. This applies to any topic of spiritual significance in marriage, but especially to something as personal as the wearing of garments. When both partners understand the why behind these sacred symbols, it strengthens not only individual testimonies but the marriage itself.
Men should go out of their way to validate their wives' beauty while honoring covenants. This balance of appreciation and respect creates a safe space for both partners to grow spiritually.
Avoiding hard conversations can lead to resentment. What might start as a minor disagreement about garments can evolve into deeper issues if not addressed with love and understanding. Learning to navigate these discussions might be the most important skill you develop in your marriage.
A Daily Reminder of Faith
In the end, the garment is about far more than a piece of clothing. It's about remembering—remembering our covenants, remembering our complete dependence on the Savior, and remembering who we are and who we are striving to become.
When we understand the garment in this light, it transforms from an obligation into a privilege. It becomes not something we have to wear, but something we get to wear—a daily, tangible connection to sacred promises and divine love.
The temple, where these covenants are made, becomes a source of strength and guidance in our lives. It's a place we can return to again and again, finding renewed understanding and commitment each time.
In a world that constantly pulls our attention in a thousand different directions, the simple act of putting on the garment each day helps us to center our lives on what matters most—our relationship with Jesus Christ.
In a world that emphasizes outward appearances, choose to remember the One who sees your heart and covers you with His infinite love.
